Gig Review: Sally Ironmonger Trio at the Ship Inn, by Sam Rapp

I went to see Sally Ironmonger Trio by chance, Saturday night at the Ship Inn, Gillingham. I had not planned to go out, but after a ponder and evening stroll, I thought, why not? So off I went – and as I stepped into the packed pub, Sally Ironmonger was in full flow. I became immersed in the crowd, who were going wild.

The strength of Sally Ironmonger’s voice and energy on stage encompassed Medway’s past with the metal works, food banks and Ferrari’s… Then up came ‘Murder on my mind’, surprisingly a very catchy tune, despite the subject matter, and the whole pub was a mass of singing, roaring the roof off with the chorus: “I’ve got murder on my mind!”

The Trio’s music explores so many issues, current and old.  I would describe it as folk with attitude. If you want to dance; if you like to sing; if you like a good crowd; if you like music with passion: then this is a must see.

A thoroughly great performance and a fab night:  if you haven’t seen them I dare you not to.

Sally Ironmoner is next performing in Kent at The Lifeboat, Margate on Sunday, May 29 (4pm) with Al Clarke.  The next Kent gig will be The Phoenix, Canterbury, with Al Clarke on Friday, July 8.
